Bronchial Asthma Anxiety

Bronchial asthma is a life-threatening and distressful condition that can kill a person instantly. If this respiratory problem is unmanaged then its fatality can easily take away someone’s life. There are several factors that contribute to the development of asthma.

This includes stress-related scenarios. However, most people are curious about the threat of anxiety to cause bronchial asthma. Is being anxious predisposes a person to suffer from asthma? What is the relationship of a psychological phenomenon to the development of a physiologic problem?

These are just few questions that most people ask themselves about the predisposing factor of asthma. Below is the scientific explanation about the relationship of bronchial asthma and anxiety.

Nobody could explain the etiologic background of anxiety causing asthma. Researchers from Nevada, USA believes that anxiety is not a factor that can trigger asthma. However, being anxious can worsen the attack.

If asthmatics feel anxious, their body responds by having several physiologic processes.

Among these are:

  1. Muscular Constriction. The muscles constrict if a person is anxious especially if the degree is severe. This can affect the accessory muscles that support the abdomen and chest. If chest tightness can occur, it will limit the ability of the lungs to expand normally. As a result, minimal oxygen supply is distributed throughout the body that may lead to sudden respiratory distress.
  2. Hyperventilation. This respiratory phenomenon is characterized as difficulty and fast breathing (more than 25 cycles per minute). As a feedback mechanism of the body towards the insufficiency of oxygen supply, the brain creates impulses (nerve conduction) to power up the heart to fill in the lacking of supply. Excessive amount of oxygenated blood pumped out from the heart can trigger the lungs to perform hyperactivity. As a result, hyperventilation can occur.
  3. Inflammation (swelling of the airway). If an anxious asthmatic suffers from hyperventilation, the pressure within the airway is increasing. This can affect the resistance level of the smallest unit in the lungs (pneumocytes) to counteract the effect. If these cells begin to work hyperactivity, it can precipitate the immune system to produce histamine. Eventually, this can trigger inflammatory responses in the body including the bronchial tubes and respiratory airway.
The threat of anxiety to people suffering from asthma is inevitable. It means that there are possible therapeutic ways to prevent it. By implementing these measures to avoid anxiety, individuals living with asthma will be free from asthma attack.
How to Control Anxiousness?

The cornerstone of preventing anxiety is to stay calm and focus. Normally, people may face a lot of daily hurdles in their life. People are commonly exposed to stressful events but with proper coping mechanisms, anxiety can be evaded.

To do this, one should:

  1. Ventilate their feelings to an effective source of outlet. Talking to someone and expresses feeling that can cause anxiety is very therapeutic.
  2. Perform deep breathing exercises. This is not just effective for anxiousness but also, it is a therapeutic activity for the lungs.
  3. Listen to soft and soothing music. Avoid listening to upbeat and loud songs because this can worsen the anxiety level.
