Adults Asthma Metered Dose Inhaler

Bronchial asthma in adults is common. It is one of the leading causes of mortality to people ages 35 and above. This condition affects the normal state of the airway due to constrictions. However, the most commonly prescribed medications for treating asthma are the inhaled respiratory treatments.

This type of medication is known as metered dose inhaler or MDI. It is made of plastic. This pressurized canister contains medications that can reduce the swelling of the smooth muscles in the airways. It has a mouthpiece wherein, people should place it inside the mouth when using it.

There are two methods to efficiently use the MDI. These include MDI with a valve holding chamber and MDI without chamber.

Proper Ways to Use the MDI with Valved Holding Chamber For Bronchial Asthma

This device holds the medication. It is used to spray the agents directly to the airway. Most people find it easy to use this method. Below are the steps to appropriately use the MDI with valved holding chamber:

  1. You must remove the cap and shake the device well.
  2. The open-end of the chamber must be inserted with MDI. It should be opposite from the mouthpiece.
  3. You need to exhale completely.
  4. The mouthpiece of the device must be placed between your upper and lower teeth. Secure the device by sealing your lips.
  5. You must press the canister.
  6. Gradually inhale thru your mouth. Avoid inhaling quickly. You will hear a horn-like sound if you breathe faster.
  7. Retain your breath for about 10 seconds. This will allow the agents to accumulate in your airways.
  8. If your doctor prescribed you with several dosages, then repeat the procedure from 1 – 7. However, make sure to wait for 1 minute before administering another dose.
  9. Afterwards, replace the cap to your MDI.
  10. If you are using steroid MDI, you must rinse your mouth using mouthwash or clean water. Take note that steroidal MDI is recommended for inhalants that has chamber.

Proper Ways of Using MDI without Chamber

  1. This method uses MDI that has no chamber. It works similarly to the other method but the approach of administering the medication is different. Below are the steps on how to use this method:
  2. You should remove the cap and shake the solution.
  3. You need to exhale completely.
  4. The mouthpiece of the device must be placed between your upper and lower teeth. Secure the device by sealing your lips.
  5. Afterwards, you should inhale slowly while pressing down the canister once.
  6. Keep inhaling deeply and slowly. It usually takes for about 4 to 7 seconds until you have inhaled completely.
  7. Retain your breath for about 10 seconds. This will allow the agents to accumulate in your airways.
  8. If your doctor prescribed you with several dosages, then repeat the procedure from 1 – 6. However, make sure to wait for 1 minute before administering another dose.
  9. Afterwards, replace the cap to your MDI.
It is recommended to keep track of your medications. To do this, you should monitor the amount and episodes of using the MDI. There are new MDIs that are designed to have counted features. Check the feature of the device you are using in order to avoid any untoward circumstances.
